My name is Pete, and I like to write…
I’ve written about pretty much everything in my lifetime – As a kid I liked creative writing more than everything else at school… In my teenage years I wrote more journal entries than was probably healthy… As a young man I started writing non-fiction on a variety of largely unlinked subjects that were interesting only to me. At college I studied Business, Economics and Politics, which involved – you guessed it – lots of writing.
As an adult I quickly found out that, much as I enjoyed it, writing stories wasn’t really my forte. Thankfully I did have a talent – Technical writing. I graduated from the University of Surrey with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Business Management and immediately got a job as a Data Analyst. That’s where I discovered my second love: Data. In the coming years I worked variously as a Data Analyst and Project Manager in the fields of Adult Social Care, Procurement, Finance and IT. My combined love of technical writing and data analysis lead me to write all sorts of documents, including:
- Project Documentation, including a 70 page Project Initiation Document for the Hampshire County Council purchasing card scheme
- Tender Documents, including Invitations to Tender (ITTs) and Tender Responses. I also designed the generic tender evaluation model used by every department of Hampshire County Council and evaluated tender submissions for a wide variety of finance, payment system and IT related projects
- Social Media Campaigns
- Bids and Proposals
- Copy for over a dozen websites, including Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
- Data summaries for audiences ranging from ground level Staff and Team Managers, to Senior Management, Directors and Councillors.
During these years I also designed two separate systems which automated the data presentation needs of my employers – Work which cumulatively saved around 2 weeks worth of work each month. Finally, since I was often working in a Project Management role, I met and worked with numerous suppliers to develop and implement IT solutions as well as training the workforce to use them.
In my spare time I continued to write about subjects that interested me – largely technology. I wrote How-To articles on subjects such as upgrading and repairing Desktop PCs. I wrote a blog dedicated to my personal experiments in diet, exercise, sleep and learning new skills. I even created a whole website dedicated to the selection and use of Office Software… It’s riveting, I promise!
Just in case you’re as much of a geek as I am, you can check out some of my personal work: Here’s an article I wrote on using the VLOOKUP function in Microsoft Excel, and here’s another on memory upgrades for desktop PCs that I wrote for a friend’s PC Repair Business website.
Some time ago I realised that, much as I enjoyed the work I was doing, I’d much rather be working for myself. Not only would that mean I could spend more of my time doing what I really enjoyed – Writing, Data Analysis and working directly with business clients – it would also give me the freedom to do things my own way. Oh.. and cut out 2-3 hours of commuting each day! I retrained as a copywriter with American Writers & Artists Inc. (AWAI), the world’s leading publisher of Copywriting study programs, and I never looked back.
So without further ado…
My name is Pete Hugh, and I help tech companies to attract more clients and do more business.
Why tech companies? Simple: Because I love tech.
I’ve always loved it, ever since my dad brought home our first computer. It was gorgeous. It was a kind of greyish beige colour, as they all were back then, and it looked something like this:
Oh yes, it was a laptop! It ran Windows 3.1 and was good for little more than playing Minesweeper. It also looked a bit like a Fisher Price kiddies toy. Nonetheless, it was my portal into the magical world of technology.
I won’t bore you further with the details, but as my life went on I’d continue to be fascinated by tech – Everything from mobile phones and e-readers to servers, programming languages and (sorry to go on about this…) office software. Over the past 5 years I’ve probably spent considerably more than a full day (yes, 24 hours) discussing Microsoft Excel, and it’s various competitors, with my Father. My Dad spent most of his career working as an Accountant, and was lucky enough to be one of the first users of Visicalc – The very first electronic spreadsheet. I won’t go into more detail than that for now, but you can imagine how quickly everyone else leaves the room when we get started…
So now you know a little about me – Probably more than you ever wanted to! Why not tell me a little about yourself?
